De 28 de fevereiro a 20 de março, o Itaú Cultural recebe inscrições para a Experiência Hélio Oiticica. Promovida pelo Núcleo de Educação Cultural do instituto, a ação é uma oportunidade para que jovens universitários do curso de artes visuais experimentem uma situação de criação e investigação artística.

A Experiência Helio Oiticica será ministrada pelas artistas e orientadoras Georgia Kyriakakis e Mila Chiovatto, que irão selecionar até dez portfólios entre todos os inscritos. Os estudantes participarão da ação de formação, que acontece de 30 de março a 16 de maio e que resultará em intervenções na obra Rhodislândia, criada pelo artista em 1971, na Universidade de Rhode Island. Rhodislândia estará exposta na mostra Hélio Oiticica - Museu É o Mundo, em cartaz no instituto em breve. A participação dos selecionados inclui a criação de uma obra que será exposta junto com esse trabalho de Oiticica, no contexto da exposição.

Esta é uma oportunidade para universitários que estejam estudando artes visuais em qualquer instituição educacional do país e que estejam cursando a partir do quinto semestre. A oficina terá carga horária de 40 horas e os participantes receberão certificado.

Para se inscrever, o aluno (ou grupo) deve enviar à instituição um portfólio (individual ou do coletivo), no tamanho A4, com no mínimo três e no máximo dez imagens de produções anteriores e/ou vídeo no formato DVD; além de currículo, comprovante de matrícula do semestre emitido pela universidade e uma carta de interesse.

Os nomes dos selecionados serão divulgados no dia 27 de março de 2010, neste site www.itaucultural.org.br.

Design Center Stuttgart calls for entries for the Baden-Württemberg International Design Award

Companies and professional designers from all over the world are invited to enter their latest products for Focus Open, the Baden-Württemberg International Design Award 2010.

Products that have been on the market for a maximum of two years can be entered for one of 16 categories. In other words, the competition is open to nearly every industry – from capital goods to products for the household to vehicles. The winners of the “Focus in Gold” and “Focus in Silver” awards can look forward to a formal award-giving ceremony in the German state of Baden-Württemberg in October. Their products will be on show in an exhibition lasting several weeks, and will be published both in an internationally available yearbook and in the internet.

The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2010, International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures, and has defined three main dimensions: dialogue, mutual understanding, and cooperation.

UNESCO, as a specialized agency of the United Nations entrusted with the mandate to build “the defences of peace in the minds of men,” has been designated as lead agency of the Year within the UN system.

Let us recall that the quest for dialogue among civilizations, cultures and peoples is deeply entrenched in UNESCO’s Constitution (1946) as one of the best guarantees of peace in the world and constitutes an overarching objective of the Year 2010.

Furthermore, one of the major aims of the Year will be to demonstrate the beneficial effects of cultural diversity recognizing the importance of transfers and exchanges between cultures through implicit or explicit dialogue that underlines how all cultures and civilizations are interlinked and contribute to the progress of humankind.

The strategy of the International Year consists in mainstreaming the above-mentioned principles in all policy-making at local, national, regional and international levels through the involvement of the greatest number of relevant stakeholders. The activities carried out under the International Year focus on:

• Promoting reciprocal knowledge of cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and religious diversity
• Building a framework for commonly shared values
• Strengthening quality education and the building of intercultural competencies
• Fostering dialogue for sustainable development.

Participants of the competition are invited to express their vision and understanding of the “Rapprochement of Cultures” by designing posters that creatively emphasize the importance of exchange and dialogue among and between cultures in ensuring social cohesion and harmonious coexistence.

JARDIM CANADÁ – The JA.CA Center for Art and Technology is pleased to announce a call for applications for a new artist residency!

JA.CA is a center for creation and artistic development located in the neighborhood of Jardim Canadá in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Jardim Canadá is bordered on one side by the city and on the other by the natural reserve Parque Estadual Serra do Rola-Moça.

At JA.CA, we think of technology, of new media, as something much beyond the technical — as a media in which artistic practice finds a dynamism and expressive immediacy congruent with the pace and fluidity of contemporary culture. We believe that new media is a critical tool for the advancement of ever-larger artistic dialogues involving new students, constituents, and interlocutors.

In 2010 JA.CA’s residency program expects to welcome Brazilian and international artists. International artists will be invited to stay for 2 months and the Residency Program will offer the following benefits: round-trip airfare from their country of origin to Belo Horizonte, individual accommodation, free access to a communal studio (with individualized workspace), and production assistance in the form of R$1,000 (Brazilian currency) per month. International residencies in 2010 will take place between the months of May and November.

The selection process will take place from February 20th to March 20th, 2010. Interested artists must apply using an online form. Applicants may continue to edit their online application until 11pm EST on March 20th, 2010 – after which applications will no longer be accepted.

Participants will be selected by a panel of curators, artists, and directors of other residencies.

The selection process will take into account the originality and coherence of the proposed project as well as the applicant’s particular artistic inquiry. All applicants—regardless of whether or not they are selected—will be notified by email.

Ars Electronica made its debut on September 18, 1979. This festival of art, technology and society spotlighted the emerging Digital Revolution. In his preface to what was going on then, Mayor Franz Hillinger wrote (with specific reference to music): “Ars Electronica is giving rise to a new tonal coloration in which state-of-the-art technology is dovetailing with the intellectual spirit of the age to open up undreamt-of expressive possibilities. [...] I am absolutely convinced that this new melodic parlance will ultimately be widely understood. After all, with the help of electronic music, it can even be made visible, be implemented in color, contour, line and rhythm that can be followed onscreen.” He would be proven correct. Within a few years, Ars Electronica developed into one of the world’s foremost media art festivals. And its growing success was paralleled by the expansion of its annual lineup of events. The 1979 festival proudly presented 20 artists and scientists; in 2008, no fewer than 484 speakers and artists from 25 countries were in attendance.

For nearly three decades now, this world-renowned event has provided an annual setting for artistic and scientific encounters with social and cultural phenomena that are the upshot of technological change. Symposia, exhibitions, performances and interventions carry these inquiries beyond the confines of conventional conference spaces and cultural venues and take them out into the public sphere and throughout the cityscape.

In this process of pervading public spaces and staging festival activities in interesting and appropriate physical settings, Ars Electronica has consistently displayed extraordinary imaginativeness. From the harbor to the mines, from factories to outlying monasteries, unusual locations have repeatedly served as sites of performances and interventions, and have, in turn, been reinterpreted by them.

But the attractiveness of Ars Electronica isn’t attributable solely to participation by renowned scientists and artists from all over the world. Or to remarkable venues. Above all, it’s the international audience that makes the biggest contribution to the festival spirit: the colorful mix of old friends and new faces who conjure up extraordinary circumstances—a “fruitful state of emergency”—every September in Linz.

UN-Habitat, with sponsorship from Veolia Environment, is launching an international competition for the design of the logo for the World Urban Campaign. The logo winner will be announced at WUC’s official launch during the 5th World Urban Forum, March 22-26 2010 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
