Good 50×70 is organizing three social communication workshops led by jury members from the contest: Alain Le Quernec, Woody Pirtle and Yossi Lemel. The workshops, in line with Good 50×70’s philosophy, aim to broaden designers and design students’ perspective on design and visual communication by using their creativity to address social issues.
The classes will be given in the Milanese schools NABA, IED and Accademia di Comunicazione in the days 15, 16 and 17 of June 2009, from 9.00 to 13.00.
All the workshops will be given in English. Each teacher will be assisted by a translator to help them communicate with the students in Italian.
To know more about it or to register for one of the workshops please check the website or download the PDF available in English and Italian
The Epidemic of Fear
Alain Le Quernec
The recent paranoia in Mexico about the outbreak of the new H1V1 “swine” flu and the earlier case of H5N1 “bird” flu in Asia. The link between these epidemics is that they spread more virulently amongst the media rather than people.
What is the meaning of this new global fear that makes our governments try and isolate countries by sealing their borders?
World War III
Yossi Lemel
World War III. The potential (and hopefully hypothetical) successor to World War II. We’ll assume it would be on a global scale and most likely nuclear and devastating in nature. This war has been anticipated and planned for by military and civil authorities, and explored in fiction in countless countries. Concepts have ranged from the limited use of atomic weapons, to the complete destruction of our planet.
Recycling on a mega scale
Woody Pirtle
We live in times where natural resources are constantly diminishing and water, air and space cannot be taken for granted anymore. Soaring prime material prices and Peak Oil are making us rethink our design processes and make them adapt to real human needs rather than marketing strategies.
Bringing design closer to people’s needs also means reshaping our cities to make them easier, and more pleasant, to live in. For example, many (abandoned) industrial spaces can be reclaimed and used more productively. A 1890 railroad bridge on the Hudson river, which had been closed since the 1960s, is a perfect example of these new possibilities. Once converted, it will be the world’s longest pedestrian bridge.

Historically posters have been inextricably linked with cause-related campaigns. Visually striking, often iconic and frequently iconoclastic, posters grab the attention like no other medium. They effectively help spread a succinct message and in doing so shift attitudes and contribute to significant changes within society.
The brief is to design a poster that delivers the message ‘Be a Part of the Action’ – this does not necessarily have to be expressed in words. The poster could bear witness to catastrophic environmental damage and in doing so, cause outrage. Alternatively the poster could actively encourage peaceful protest to expose an environmental problem.
Above all, the poster needs to raise awareness of environmental issues and inspire action.
The purpose of Greenpeace Design Awards is to acknowledge the achievements of the most innovative and creative individuals whose work best reflects environmental concerns in a visually striking and iconic way.
Entrants will have a chance to bring about real change in society as their work will be considered for use for major Greenpeace Australian Pacific campaigns.
In recognition of the excellence in design, the winning entrants will be awarded a unique Greenpeace Design Awards trophy.

Riding bikes is environmentally friendly. Thats nothing new, but it does take on a whole new dimension when we start talking about the climate debate. According to futurologist Matthias Horx, the bicycle is benefiting hugely from the climate change: The first evolutionary winner of the climate change is the bicycle. It is becoming a fully acceptable means of transportation that the executives of tomorrow will use to get to work. In his latest trend report, the renowned scientist announces that the boom of the bicycle in the general public will create a diverse service and lifestyle culture all revolving around the pedals.
Outstanding design can provide valuable guidance in a large market. The EUROBIKE AWARD 2008, which will be presented for the fourth time this year, shows consumers what is innovative and functional as well as environmentally friendly and sustainable on the topic of bicycles. And one thing is sure: the EUROBIKE AWARD has established a name for itself in the bike industry as an exceptional marketing instrument.
New categories were defined for the competition this year for example Cruiser/Designbike as well as Special Purpose Bike. The latest adding to the list of categories is Concepts. In addition to manufacturers and designers students are also welcome to participate by entering experimental drafts of products and studies that have not yet been implemented.
As a further novelty, the EUROBIKE Green Award will be awarded to a product which has an outstanding ecological and sustainable value.
Messe Friedrichshafen as the host of the design award for the bicycle industry and we from iF as the organizers look forward to many entries from manufacturers, designers and engineers from all over the world with the submission deadline dated at July 25, 2008. An internationally renowned jury of experts will select the best products in and around the bike industry. We wish all the participants the best of luck!
